Dr. Mary J. Njoku is professor and vice chair for Education in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM), the Endowed Matjasko Professor for Education in Anesthesiology since 2010, and the designated institutional official for Graduate Medical Education (GME) for the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) since 2012. She graduated from Meharry Medical College in 1985, then completed her residency in internal medicine at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore from 1985 to 1988, followed by an anesthesiology residency and a critical care medicine fellowship, both at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Dr. Njoku joined the faculty of the UMSOM in the Department of Anesthesiology in 1992. She served as the program director of the anesthesiology residency from 1995 to 2014, and as the program director of the anesthesiology critical care medicine fellowship from 1997 to 2000. She has served as a volunteer for the American Board of Anesthesiology Examinations since 1998. Dr. Njoku's interests are GME, training, curriculum development, and evaluation. She has been a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society since 1985, and has received numerous awards for teaching, advising, and clinical care. She has been a mentor and advisor to numerous students, residents, fellows, and faculty members, and has supported the professional development of many other learners and physicians.
Dr. Njoku has been a member of the Association of American Medical Colleges Group on Resident Affairs (GRA) since 2012, completed the GRA Leadership Development Course in 2013, and served as a member of the GRA Steering Committee (2015-2018), the GRA Meeting Planning Committee (2016-2017), and as the GRA Representative to Student Surveys Advisory Committee (2018-2022).
In her role as DIO, Dr. Njoku collaboratively provides oversight for 70 ACGME-accredited programs and 30 programs accredited or recognized by other organizations, including newly recognized Non-Standard Training programs—this entails a total of 961 residents and fellows for the current academic year. Since 2008, she has served as a member of the ACGME Appeals Panel for anesthesiology. From 2019-2022, Dr. Njoku co-led with the UMMC quality and safety leaders, the UMMC multidisciplinary team that was selected to join the ACGME’s Pursuing Excellence in Clinical Learning Environments Pathway Leaders cohort.
