Dr. Thomas Cavalieri is the Vice President of Virtua Health College of Medicine and Life Sciences of Rowan University and Chief Academic Officer at Virtua Health. He is a professor of Medicine and the Osteopathic Heritage Endowed Chair for Primary Care Research. As the inaugural Vice President, Dr. Cavalieri oversees the infrastructure to support the academic mission of the School of Osteopathic Medicine, the School of Nursing and Health Professions, and the School of Translational Biomedical Engineering and Sciences.
Dr. Cavalieri served as the Dean of Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine (now Rowan-Virtua SOM) for 17 years. He led the successful integration of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-School of Osteopathic Medicine (UMDNJ-SOM), which became part of Rowan University, a Carnegie-classified research university. He successfully transitioned the school’s graduate medical education programs to ACGME accreditation. In 2021, Dr. Cavalieri oversaw the opening of a second SOM campus in nearby Sewell.
Dr. Cavalieri has raised the bar on the standard of care for the senior population. He’s the founding director of the Center of Aging at UMDNJ-SOM, which has grown into the Department of Geriatrics and Gerontology-New Jersey Institute for Successful Aging. For 17 years, Rowan-Virtua SOM has been named by U.S. News & World Report as one of the country’s best medical schools for geriatric medical education. He was the recipient of an Academic Career Leadership Award from the National Institute of Aging and has been named a Top Doc in geriatrics in various publications.
