The ACGME congratulates the 2026 recipients of the ACGME Awards. Read the announcement with the full list of this year's honorees in the ACGME Newsroom.

The ACGME annually honors individuals, programs, and organizations through its Awards Program, and awardees are celebrated each year at the Annual Educational Conference. The ACGME currently grants the following awards through this program.

Lifetime Achievement Award

John C. Gienapp Award

Honors an individual who has dedicated themselves and made outstanding contributions to graduate medical education and ACGME accreditation activities.

Resident/Fellow Awards

David C. Leach Award

Recognizes innovation and improvement in graduate medical education programs, advanced humanism in medicine, and increased efficiency and emphasis on educational outcomes.

Lewis Blackman Patient Safety Award

Recognizes strategies that lead to measurable improvements in patient safety, demonstrated through innovative solutions and initiatives.

Coordinator Awards

Debra L. Dooley GME Program Coordinator Excellence Award

Recognizes in-depth understanding of the accreditation process, excellent communication skills, and projects to improve graduate medical education programs.

GME Institutional Coordinator Excellence Award

Recognizes in-depth knowledge of graduate medical education and institutional review processes.

Designated Institutional Official (DIO) and Program Director Awards

Parker J. Palmer Courage to Lead Award 

Recognizes the work of DIOs with strong leadership and astute resource management in innovation and improvement in graduate medical education programs and their Sponsoring Institutions.

Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach Award 

Recognizes program directors who have fostered innovation and improvement in graduate medical education programs and who serve as role models for their residents/fellows.

Barbara Ross-Lee, DO Humanity in Leadership Award

Recognizes projects that exemplify innovative and creative strategies for cultivating leadership grounded in humanistic values in graduate medical education (GME).

Recognizes ethical practices, integrity, and commitment to patient-centered care.

Joint Award

Jeremiah A. Barondess Fellowship in the Clinical Transaction

Granted in collaboration with the New York Academy of Medicine, the fellowship supports junior faculty members in internal medicine with a commitment to develop a program that enhances this fundamental element of clinical care through education innovation.
