Intealth Issues Guidance on New US Entry Restrictions Affecting International Medical Graduates

June 9, 2025

In response to a Presidential Proclamation issued on June 4, 2025, Intealth has released guidance for graduate medical education (GME) institutions and international medical graduates (IMGs) that may be affected by new entry restrictions.

The proclamation, titled “Restricting the Entry of Foreign Nationals to Protect the United States from Foreign Terrorists and Other National Security and Public Safety Threats,” introduces two new categories of restrictions for entry of certain foreign nationals to the US, effective June 9, 2025.

Recommendations from Intealth for institutions and physicians:

Visa Holders and Applicants: Physicians from or with ties to any of the affected countries should consult with immigration counsel before making international travel plans or visa applications.

Training Program Liaisons and Coordinators: Submit any pending J-1 applications or renewals promptly and monitor travel- or visa-related issues for learners from the listed countries.

Ongoing Monitoring: Continue to follow Intealth communications for further guidance as the situation evolves and additional implementing details become available.

Read the full communication sent last week to J-1 physicians, US program liaisons, program directors, and designated institutional officials, as well as a statement from Intealth President and Chief Executive Officer Eric S. Holmboe, MD on the Intealth website.
