ACGME President and Chief Executive Officer Thomas J. Nasca, MD, MACP has issued a letter to the GME community to share how the ACGME is responding to the feedback from listening sessions held earlier this month to guide modifications to the accreditation processes during the COVID-19 crisis.

The letter addresses updates, changes, and responses to:

The window for submitting CLER visit blackout weeks is now open through January 26, 2022 for blocking off dates in the period highlighted below. Sponsoring Institutions can submit up to four blackout weeks during this period.

Milestones Mid-Year Reporting Window Open Until February 11

In response to the recent COVID-19 surge and its impact on Sponsoring Institutions and programs, the reporting window has been extended by one month until Friday, February 11, 2022. This change is reflected in the Accreditation Data System (ADS). Milestones assessments can be submitted via ADS at any point before this date.

The ACGME's Back to Bedside initiative is designed to empower residents and fellows to develop transformative projects that foster meaning and joy in work and allow them to engage on a deeper level with what is at the heart of medicine: their patients.

A Document Analysis of Nationally Available Faculty Assessment Forms of Resident Performance
Judith C. French, PhD; Lily C. Pien, MD, MHPE 
In this study, the authors analyzed prompts used in forms for faculty assessment of resident performance, guided by best practices in survey research methodology, self-regulation theory, and competency-based assessment to see if prompts included components based on assessment for learning. The document analysis of assessment forms revealed they do not always follow best practices in survey design for narrative sections, nor do they universally address elements deemed important for promotion of self-regulation and competency-based assessment.

Introduction to the JGME Literature Review Series
Anna MacLeod, PhD; Robin Parker, MLIS; Lara Varpio, PhD
In this series, JGME will provide an overview of eight influential approaches to knowledge synthesis: systematic reviews, realist reviews, narrative reviews, scoping reviews, state-of-the-art, critical reviews, meta-ethnographic reviews, and integrative reviews. Two articles will be provided for each literature review type: 1) an overview of the review type with background information on philosophical foundations, purposes, and expected products for readers and researchers, and 2) a short article with steps that outline the “nuts and bolts” of this type of review.

Chief Residents Dates and Locations Announced

The ACGME is hosting the Annual Leadership Skills Training Program for Chief Residents in person in 2022, pending local public health laws and regulations regarding COVID-19. The program is designed to provide a transitional experience into the leadership role of chief resident by enhancing each participant's self-awareness and understanding of their personal leadership styles, strengths, and weaknesses as leaders, developing knowledge and appreciation of group and interpersonal behavior, and learning additional skills critical to success and satisfaction as both a clinician and leader.

NEW! Comment Period Extended for Program requirements for family medicine

In response to feedback from the community, the Review Committee for ACGME Program Requirements for Family Medicine has granted a two-week extension to the original due date for comments on the proposed major revision to the Program Requirements for Graduate Medical Education in Family Medicine.

The proposed Program Requirements and accompanying Impact Statement, as well as the form to be used for submitting comments, can be found here.

Comments are now due by Friday, February 11, 2022.

Note that comments must be submitted electronically, using the form provided. Any responses that do not address the requested information, or which are submitted in a format other than indicated, may or may not be considered, at the discretion of the Review Committee.

Comments addressing full-time equivalency (FTE) support for program leadership, program coordinators, and core faulty members should not be submitted. The Review Committee received feedback on proposed revisions related to that subject for all the internal medicine subspecialities in the fall of 2021. Proposed revisions related to administrative support are under review, and so are not reflected in the Program Requirements that are currently in effect and posted online. For the multidisciplinary subspecialties of sleep medicine and clinical informatics, the Review Committee will proceed with a focused revision for FTE support soon.
