ACGME Chief Sponsoring Institutions and Clinical Learning Environment Officer Kevin B. Weiss, MD, MPH announced that he will be leaving the ACGME to devote his efforts to graduate education in patient safety and quality.
During his 12-year tenure at the ACGME, Dr. Weiss developed and managed the Clinical Learning Environment Review (CLER) Program, an institutional effort to assess clinical learning environments and improve education in patient safety and quality improvement; initiated the ACGME’s accreditation of Sponsoring Institution-based fellowships in carceral medicine and in health care administration, leadership, and management; launched the Medically Underserved Areas and Populations (MUA/P) unit; and oversaw institutional accreditation and Non-Standard Training Recognition. For more than 20 years, he has devoted his career to health care quality, patient safety, and health care equity and is an internationally recognized leader in these areas. He also developed the first US graduate-level master’s degree program in patient safety and health care quality at Northwestern University.

In preparation for Dr. Weiss’ departure, the Institutional Accreditation and Recognition and Medically Underserved Areas and Populations (MUA/P) teams are now part of the Department of Accreditation, Recognition, and Field Activities, under the direction of Chief Accreditation Officer Dr. Mary Klingensmith.
The Institutional Outreach and Collaboration are now part of the CLER Program, which remains independent of accreditation activities, and now reports to the Office of the President and Chief Executive Officer, with administrative leadership from Chief of Staff and Chief Education Officer Dr. Timothy Brigham.
