NEW! Common Program Requirements Background and Intent Update
The Common Program Requirements to be effective July 1, 2022 have been edited to include updated Background and Intent under three areas: II.C.2., VI.C., and VI.C.1.e).
Note: the modification to the Background and Intent under II.C.2. is only applicable to the Residency, Fellowship, and Post-Doctoral Education versions of the Common Program Requirements.
This updated Background and Intent now appears in the Common Program Requirements available on the Common Program Requirements page under “Common Program Requirements Future Effective Date” and will appear in each set of specialty-specific Program Requirements effective July 1, 2022.
NEW! Clinician Educator Milestones Feedback Survey
The Clinician Educator Milestones are a joint effort of the ACGME, Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education, Association of American Medical Colleges, and the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine. This series of subcompetencies is designed to aid in the development and improvement of teaching and learning skills across the continuum of medical education.
The Clinician Educator Milestones are currently in a pilot phase. The Clinician Educator Milestones are not an ACGME accreditation requirement and are not intended to become one in the future.

ACGME Equity MattersTM Modules Available in Learn at ACGME
The ACGME is proud to unveil self-directed ACGME Equity Matters content in Learn at ACGME. These educational resources provide diverse perspectives while raising historical and current injustices in the medical education system in an organized and intentional way. The materials are designed for organizations with leadership support, as well as resources and infrastructure commitments to equity for making meaningful change. (Note: A free account is required to access content in Learn at ACGME.)
The modules are available in two tracks: continuing medical education (CME) learning path; and video library. In the learning path, content is self-paced within a structured design for CME credit. Video library content can be accessed in any order; using guidance from a trained facilitator when viewing modules with large audiences is recommended to avoid perpetuating harm and ensure a safe learning environment.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced the medical education community to rely on remote learning, and the transition to video-broadcasted simulation learning can be difficult. This article offers recommendations for overcoming obstacles to developing a virtual simulation program and provides advice to other programs that may need to create or optimize a virtual simulation experience.

Register Now for Spring 2022 Developing Faculty Competencies in Assessment Course
Registration for the spring 2022 ACGME faculty development course is open! Led by ACGME senior staff members and selected expert instructors from around the country, Developing Faculty Competencies in Assessment helps participants build effective assessment programs for their residency or fellowship programs. Offered virtually, sessions are highly interactive and use multiple learning approaches, including virtual simulations, to provide participants with approaches and tools for effective assessment.

NEW! ACGME Seeks Public Member
The following Review Committee is seeking its next public member for a six-year term beginning July 1, 2023. these members share the perspective of the public, foster public accountability, enrich the work of the Committee through outside expertise, and create transparency. While nominees cannot be physicians, other health care professionals are permitted if they are not employed by an organization with ACGME-accredited residency or fellowship programs.

ACGME Seeks Resident Members
The following Review Committees seeks nomination for their next resident member positions. Nominees must be enrolled in an ACGME-accredited residency or fellowship program at the time of the appointment and may not serve more than one year beyond completion of that residency or fellowship. After review and consideration of all nominees, the Review Committee will forward its selection to the ACGME Board of Directors for approval. Terms begin July 1, 2023 and end June 30, 2025.

NEW! Updated Background and Intent for Neurocritical Care
In response to questions from the community, Background and Intent related to board certification requirements has been added to the Program Requirements for Graduate Medical Education in Neurocritical Care. The new Background and Intent can be found under Program Requirements II.A.3.b).(1), II.B.4.c).(1), and II.B.4.d). The updated Requirements are available under the "Currently in Effect" heading on the Program Requirements and FAQs and Applications pages of the Neurology and Neurological Surgery sections of the ACGME website. NEW! Congenital Cardiac Surgery Fellowship Update
The Review Committee for Thoracic Surgery announces its intent to bring a request forward to the Committee on Requirements of the ACGME Board of Directors to revise the Program Requirements to align with the certifying board. Alignment with the American Board of Thoracic Surgery (ABTS) includes a revision to the required length of the educational program (12 to 24 months) and modifications to Case Log minimums. The ABTS changes are effective July 1, 2023, and the Review Committee will propose an aligned timeline.
The Review Committee will continue to announce proposed changes, timelines, and opportunities for review and comment through this forum, as well as through direct communication with affected stakeholders.

The Review Committees for Neurology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Psychiatry are preparing to begin a major revision of the current Program Requirements for Brain Injury Medicine and invite comments related to specific requirements or topics that should be addressed as the revised requirements are developed. Comments addressing full-time equivalency (FTE) support for program leadership and program coordinators should not be submitted; proposed revisions related to those subjects are currently under review, and so are not reflected in the Program Requirements currently in effect and posted online.

Designation of New Preventive Medicine Specialties - Deadline Next Week!
The ACGME Board of Directors recently approved an exception to the usual process for the designation of new specialties. This exception was granted for the process to designate aerospace medicine, occupational and environmental medicine, and public health and general preventive medicine as individual specialties separately accredited by the ACGME. These three specialties currently exist under the umbrella designation of preventive medicine; however, this designation would create three separate specialties with three separate specialty codes. The Review Committee for Preventive Medicine would still review all three specialties, as it does now.
Since there would be three distinct specialties, there would be three sets of Program Requirements, which have been created by separating the requirements relevant to each specialty from the current version that encompasses all three. While they are designated as new Program Requirements, the content remains essentially the same for each specialty as it exists now in the comprehensive Program Requirements for Graduate Medical Education in Preventive Medicine. Aside from separating into three versions and making minor wording changes to align with the new specialty designations, there were two notable revisions: one related to the dedicated time requirements for program leadership (see II.A.2.a) and II.A.2.a).(1)); and one to clarify that residents appointed at the PM-2 level must still complete 10 months of direct patient care (see III.A.2.c).(1).(a).(i)).
The three sets of Program Requirements are posted for public review and comment, and feedback can be provided through March 30, 2022. The review and comment form also includes a field to comment on the specialty designation change. Only comments and feedback submitted to preventivemedicinedg@acgme.org using the form provided will be accepted.

Allergy and Immunology Dedicated Time Requirements
In February 2022, the ACGME Board of Directors approved a revision to the Program Requirements for Allergy and Immunology that included new requirements related to dedicated time for program leadership and program coordinators. Due to an administrative error, the incorrect numbers for program leadership dedicated time (Program Requirement II.A.2.a)) were published. The updated Requirements and FAQs are available under the "Future Effective Date" heading on the Program Requirements and FAQs and Applications page of the Allergy and Immunology section of the ACGME website. The ACGME apologizes for any inconvenience this may have caused.
Case Log System for Ophthalmology Updated
The Review Committee has updated the ACGME Case Log System to improve documentation of resident experiences. The oculoplastic and orbit area was re-organized to better reflect the subspecialty’s accepted procedural categories. In addition, more than 240 additional CPT codes are now being tracked in the Case Log, with approximately 50 giving credit towards a minimum. A new area “examination/clinical procedures/testing” was also created. It includes such activities as ultrasounds; logging these experiences is optional.
