NEW! 2023 Milestones National Report
The 2023 Milestones National Report is now available on the Research and Reports page of the Milestones section of the ACGME website.
The eighth edition of the Milestones National Report presents national Milestones data in aggregate form for the latest academic year (July 1, 2022-June 30, 2023). The ACGME produces this report for every academic year so program leaders can compare national-level data in their specialties and subspecialties directly to their own program data.
New for the 2023 report:
- Information on Osteopathic Recognition Milestones.
- For easier use and distribution, specialty-specific publications, including the applicable subspecialties, are posted on each specialty's Milestones tab on the ACGME website.

Join the 2024-2025 ACGME Equity MattersTM Learning Community
The ACGME seeks organizations to participate in the 2024-2025 ACGME Equity Matters Learning Community. Organizations engaged in this new Learning Community should be committed to developing robust, sustainable approaches focused on increasing physician diversity and providing inclusive learning and working environments.
Applicants will form an organizational team and commit to engaging in the 18-month program and producing a capstone project.
TUESDAY! MUA/P Interest Group Sessions
The ACGME will hold sessions for GME community members involved in addressing the needs of MUA/Ps (places or communities in which groups of people have unmet health or health care needs).
The aim of these interest group sessions is for the community to learn about efforts in GME and MUA/P, to solve for common challenges, and to share helpful knowledge and resources.

NEXT WEEK! Direct Observation Toolkit Workshop
Explore the ACGME’s new Improving Assessment Using Direct Observation Toolkit with ACGME experts and toolkit authors. The toolkit offers faculty development curricula for institutions that can be adapted to local needs and provides individual faculty members with techniques that will help them become better educators. The toolkit is available at no cost to the GME community through the ACGME’s online learning portal, Learn at ACGME.

The Review Committee for Neurology is preparing to begin a major revision of the Program Requirements for the subspecialties of clinical neurophysiology, epilepsy, neurodevelopmental disabilities, neuromuscular medicine, and vascular neurology and invites comments related to specific requirements or topics that should be addressed as the revisions are developed. In particular, the Review Committee invites comments related to what the respective subspecialties will look like in the future, and the competencies, resources, and personnel necessary to create physicians who will practice in the subspecialty. The Review Committee for Anesthesiology is preparing to begin a major revision of the Program Requirements for the subspecialties of:
- Adult cardiothoracic anesthesiology
- Anesthesiology critical care medicine
- Obstetric anesthesiology*
- Pediatric anesthesiology
*The interim revisions for the Program Requirements for Graduate Medical Education in Obstetric Anesthesiology posted for public comment on May 12, 2023 have been tabled, and will be considered as part of the major revision process now underway. There is potential for additional changes to the previous proposed revisions.

Review Committee Chair to Present at #AAO2023
Dr. Laura Green, chair of the Review Committee for Ophthalmology, will present a session at the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Annual Meeting on Saturday, November 4, 2023, from 3:45-5:00 p.m. Pacific about the upcoming major revision of the Program Requirements for Graduate Medical Education in Ophthalmology. Dr. Green will provide updates and facilitate an interactive discussion about the ophthalmologist of the future.

Assessing the Finances of Applying to Surgical Residency in 2019-2020: A US Nationwide Surgical Specialties Comparison

The costs of applying to residency programs may affect which students apply to a specialty, yet few studies have compared expenses of applying to different surgical specialties. This study found that applying to surgical residencies in the pre-COVID-19-pandemic era was expensive, with mean costs of more than $10,000 for neurological surgery and plastic surgery. The largest contributions to total costs were interview expenses.
The Virtual Visit: A Telehealth Curriculum for Internal Medicine Residents Featuring a Virtual Physical Examination

During the COVID-19 pandemic, medical professionals adapted to virtual care though most resident physicians had no formal telehealth training and the virtual physical examination was underused. The curriculum developed in this study focused on four competencies: telehealth legal guidelines; virtual physical examination; health equity; and telehealth chronic disease management. This curriculum significantly increased residents’ confidence in delivering virtual care.
Publish or Perish: The Research Arms Race in Residency Selection

In this Perspectives article, the authors argue that in defining measures of merit, GME has a responsibility to ensure that applicants compete in ways that benefit patients or the profession rather than just providing relative advantage in the zero-sum selection game. Research is valuable, but its value is not based on quantity.
NEW! The ACGME Seeks Public Members
The following Review Committees seek their next public members for a six-year term beginning July 1, 2024. Public members share the perspective of the public, foster public accountability, enrich the work of the Review Committee through outside expertise, and create transparency. While nominees cannot be physicians, other health care professionals are permitted if they are not employed by an organization with ACGME-accredited residency or fellowship programs.

The ACGME Seeks Osteopathic Recognition Committee Member
The Osteopathic Recognition Committee is seeking one new physician member. Candidates must be a program director or Director of Osteopathic Education in a program with Osteopathic Recognition. Nominations are due December 1, 2023.
The Recognition Committee will forward its selection to the ACGME Board of Directors for approval. The new member’s term will begin July 1, 2024 and end June 30, 2030.
