NEW! Office Hours for Neurological Surgery Available in New York
Neurological surgery program leaders can meet with the ACGME Review Committee Executive Director and Chair during the Society of Neurological Surgeons 2024 Annual Meeting Saturday, May 18, 2024, in New York, New York.
Appointments will be scheduled on a first come, first served basis and will take place at the New York Hilton Midtown Hotel from 12:00-3:30 p.m. Central.

NEW! Case Log Update for Radiology
The Review Committee for Radiology sent a notification to radiology programs last week announcing upcoming revisions to the ACGME Case Log System for Radiology, which will be deployed this Wednesday, May 1, 2024. Note: There is no need to re-enter any prior procedural data.
Updates include a new hierarchical nomenclature organized by diagnostic and interventional radiology categories. The Review Committee expects all diagnostic and interventional radiology residents to enter all procedures they perform in their program. Interventional radiology residents should also record all new outpatient interventional radiology clinic encounters. Diagnostic imaging studies should continue to be entered in aggregate based on prior CPT code definitions, and this may be managed by program coordinators rather than by individual residents. Users may need to create new favorites lists for selected procedures.
Note that options have been added to log I-131 and parenteral nuclear therapies, as well as hands-on ultrasound cases, and that I-131 and parenteral nuclear therapies recorded in the ACGME Case Log System will not be shared with the American Board of Nuclear Medicine or Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Approval for Authorized User status is not managed by the ACGME.

NEW! Updated Surgery Block Diagram Template
Updated guidance, via a fillable block diagram template, is now available for general surgery programs. Programs should ensure that the new format is used and uploaded for the 2024 Accreditation Data System (ADS) Annual Update.

The Review Committees for Internal Medicine and Pediatrics are preparing for a major revision of the Program Requirements for combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics. In particular, the Review Committees invite comments related to specific Requirements or topics that should be addressed as the revised Requirements are developed. The current set of Requirements is available in the Internal Medicine and Pediatrics sections of the ACGME website.

Radiation Oncology Holman Pathway Specialty Track Available
Effective April 25, 2024, radiation oncology programs can identify Holman Pathway residents in their Resident Roster. In the "Residents" section of ADS, under "2. Resident Status," choose "Holman Pathway" as the Specialty Track for the applicable resident(s). The Case Log Report will reflect the Holman Pathway procedure minimum requirements for the selected resident(s).

Motivations for Entrustable Professional Activity Assessment: Gaps Between Curriculum Theory and Resident Reality

Residents are expected to engage in competency-based medical education (CBME) and often to take the lead on obtaining assessments, but an understanding of what motivates residents to do so is lacking. This qualitative study of residents enrolled in CBME programs found that fulfilling a program requirement was the dominant motivation for obtaining entrustable professional activities, and very few residents were motivated primarily by a desire to drive learning and self-improvement.
Artificial Intelligence in Graduate Medical Education Applications

Until there are more nuanced and generally agreed-upon national guidelines on the use of AI in application preparation, graduate medical education (GME) programs should consider posting explicit policies on their websites regarding the use of AI in preparing application materials.

Article: A Standards-Based Checklist for Program Evaluation as Scholarly Activity

This monthly online even occurs on the third Thursday of each month. This resource is offered at no cost to the GME community. New topics, articles, and speakers will be offered each session. Participants should read the article ahead of time and come with questions.
Shaping GME: Call for Comments
Every 10 years, Review Committees are required to review their specialty-specific Program Requirements to determine necessary revisions. The ACGME Board of Directors has approved a new process for all such major revisions going forward.
The process convenes specialty-specific writing groups, who, along with members of the specialty community and leaders from other specialties and related fields, rigorously and creatively consider what the specialty will look like in the future (recognizing that the future is marked with significant uncertainty). Out of this process, the writing group drafts and proposes revisions to the Program Requirements that will prepare learners for current and future practice.
