NEW! Read the Foundational Competencies for Undergraduate Medical Education

The Association of American Medical Colleges, the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine, and the ACGME have collaborated to publish a set of Foundational Competencies for Undergraduate Medical Education. This shared competency framework for both DO and MD medical students establishes six Foundational Competencies—Professionalism, Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Medical Knowledge, Practice-Based Learning and Improvement, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, and Systems-Based Practice—complemented by 45 subcompetencies for MD and DO students, and four additional subcompetencies for DO students.

Language Equity in Health Care Toolkit

NEW! Supervision Definitions and Guidelines

The Review Committee for Radiology has posted two new documents about supervision on the Documents and Resources page of the Radiology section of the website.

  • “Supervision Definitions Applied in Radiology” provides clarification regarding the ACGME supervision categories as they apply to the unique learning environment in radiology and the Review Committee’s expectations in the radiology learning environment.
  • “Guidelines for Daytime Remote Supervision” provides acceptable ways remote work (teleradiology) can be used in the radiology learning environment.

Knowing that graduate medical educators interested in education research may seek foundational general overview articles on education research methods, the authors of this Brief Report used a modified Delphi method and found nine articles deemed useful as resources.

Formal Parental Leave Policies and Trainee Well-Being in US Graduate Medical Education: A Systematic Review

The authors found that extended parental leave, notably beyond six weeks, improved resident and fellow well-being and professional satisfaction. Based on learners’ perspectives, ideal parental leave policies offer a minimum of six to eight weeks of leave, with a formal and clearly written policy available.

The Leadership Skills Training Program for Chief Residents is designed to provide a transitional experience into the role of chief resident. The program introduces leadership concepts to enhance individual effectiveness in a leadership role. The program is three full days and is open to chief residents from all medical and surgical specialties. Nine sessions will be offered in Chicago in 2025:

NEW! Self-Empowerment Workshop for Coordinators

This online workshop helps coordinators grow their skills to empower themselves in GME, including detailed, practical strategies for acting as a leader in the coordinator role, successful networking, overcoming challenges to professionalism, promoting achievements, and effectively navigating complex interpersonal situations. The workshop will run January 6-14, 2025. Participation for all days is required to complete the workshop. A live virtual session will be held January 9 from 12:00-1:30 p.m. Central. Space is limited.

Developing Faculty Competencies in Assessment

This course helps participants build effective assessment programs for their residency or fellowship. Topics include assessment methods, feedback, direct observation, Clinical Competency Committees, and more. The spring course will be offered in Chicago, Illinois, in a six-day session March 30-April 4, 2025. Registration closes March 3, 2025.
