Clinicians often underutilize qualified interpreters and are rarely taught strategies to appropriately assess their language proficiency or communication skills in languages besides English. To address these educational gaps, this toolkit, developed as part of ACGME Equity Matters®, shares evidence-based educational strategies and resources to support clinician multilingualism and equitable health care for non-English language preference populations.

A Resident-Led Quality Improvement Initiative to Increase End-of-Life Planning in Primary Care Brooke Wagen, MD; Simisola Kuye, MD; Rajvi Patel, DO; Jaya Vasudevan, MD; Lisi Wang, PhD; Robin Reister, MD; Michael Pignone, MD; Christopher Moriates, MD Patients prefer talking to their physicians about end-of-life planning, but few documented conversations occur in resident primary care clinics. To improve documentation of advance care and end-of-life discussions, this Veterans Affairs quality improvement study used targeting criteria for internal medicine patients at highest risk of death, a team approach for scheduling patients for end-of-life visits, and resident education. Resident knowledge, patient visits, and documented advance care plans increased substantially with these approaches.
Interventions to Support Resident and Fellow Well-Being During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Scoping Review
Halah Ibrahim, MD, MEHP; Sawsan Abdel-Razig, MD, MEHP; Lyuba Konopasek, MD; Jillian Silverberg, MSLIS, MA; Ingrid Philibert, PhD, MA, MBA
The COVID-19 pandemic led to rapid and wide-scale changes in GME and affected the well-being of frontline physicians, including residents and fellows. While institutions and programs implemented initiatives to support the unique needs of learners during the pandemic, there remains a gap in the literature in examining the approaches used, the domains of well-being addressed, and the effectiveness of these efforts.
This course is designed to help participants build effective assessment programs for their residency or fellowship and will provide a roadmap for developing an assessment system to assist participants in implementing changes within their own institution. Sessions are highly interactive and use multiple learning approaches, including simulation practice, peer consultations, and application exercises to provide participants with methods and tools for effective programs of assessment. Topics include assessment methods, feedback, direct observation, clinical competency committees, and more. The spring 2025 course will be offered in Chicago, Illinois, in a six-day session. Registration will close March 3, 2025.
