Program Coordinator Handbook
Developed by the 2019-2023 Coordinator Advisory Group, the Program Coordinator Handbook serves as a guide for both new and experienced program coordinators seeking to expand their knowledge of specific topics, tasks, and responsibilities associated with their role. Many will utilize this resource as a reference book, reviewing relevant topics as needed.
Program Coordinator Handbook Companion: Paving Your Path to Success
This new Learning Path in the ACGME’s online learning portal, Learn at ACGME, is a collection of self-paced modules featuring interactive materials based on the content of the physical Handbook. Meant for program coordinators who wish to expand their knowledge further, this learning path is a great resource that can be used on an as-needed basis. Some of the topics featured are: Program Requirements; Accreditation Letters; Citations; Recruitment; Orientation; In-Training Examinations; and much more! By engaging with this resource, program coordinators will gain a comprehensive understanding of their role, strengthen their knowledge of accreditation processes, improve recruitment and onboarding skills, foster professional development, enhance problem-solving abilities, and build a sense of community within the field. The Learning Path will feature 24 modules in total, with the first 12 available now and the remaining to follow soon.

NEW! Selected Topics across Program Requirements Updated
The Selected Topics across Program Requirements documents for Coordinator Dedicated Time, Core Faculty Dedicated Time, Program Leadership Dedicated Time, Number of Faculty, Program Director Qualifications, Resident/Fellow Scholarly Activity, Independent Practice, and Direct Supervision Using Telecommunication have been updated to reflect the specialty-/subspecialty-specific Program Requirements in effect as of July 1, 2024. A new document listing faculty member qualifications has also been added.
All current versions of these documents can be found on the Institutional Applications and Requirements page of the website, under the "Selected Topics across Program Requirements" heading.
NEW! Requirements Archive
The ACGME is pleased to announce a new Requirements Archive! The Requirements Archive can be accessed in ADS Public, from the right-hand navigation menu.
The ACGME maintains an archive of old Program, Institutional, and Recognition Requirements as historical documents to assist with record-keeping, research, references, and documentation. Previously, these documents were housed internally at the ACGME, and requests from the GME community were managed on a case-by-case basis. The new Requirements Archive was created to ensure that the available Requirements documents represent the most accurate and comprehensive version of a set of Requirements for any point in time, and that anyone who requests or searches for this information consistently gets the same information and version.
The new Requirements Archive is an easily searchable, one-stop-shop for anyone seeking to reference these historical documents. Requirements documents in the Archive are labeled with the starting and ending effective dates to make it easy to find the correct version for any point in time and avoid confusion with the currently-in-effect Requirements. (Note: new specialties/subspecialties are only labeled with the starting effective date.) The Requirements Archive will be updated annually.

NEW! Submit CLER Visit Blackout Dates by July 26
The window for submitting Clinical Learning Environment Review (CLER) Visit blackout weeks is open through July 26, 2024 for blocking off dates in the period highlighted below. Sponsoring Institutions can submit up to four blackout weeks during this period.

NRMP® YEARLY RESIDENT DATA AVAILABLE IN ADS
In an effort to reduce burden, the ACGME reached an agreement with the National Resident Matching Program® (NRMP®) to receive yearly data regarding residents who have matched into ACGME-accredited programs. The first set of data was received in May and will be available for the Annual Update process. On July 1, programs can add new residents/fellows, and an optional NRMP-dropdown will appear to populate data on the form.
ADS ANNUAL UPDATE SCHEDULE
The ADS Annual Update for 2024-2025 will be collected between July and September 2024, and programs will receive an initial notification email at the beginning of the reporting timeframe noting all Annual Update requirements and their respective deadlines. Each program's timeframe will appear under "Program" > "Important Dates" on the right-hand side by July 1.
The 2024-2025 ADS Annual Update Overview, Summary of Changes, FAQs, schedule by specialty, and other resources are available in the Annual Update section of the ADS Help Center.

MUA/P Interest Group
The ACGME hosts a monthly virtual interest group session for GME community members involved in addressing the needs of MUA/Ps, which are places or communities with groups of people who have unmet health or health care needs.

These one-hour Zoom calls will take place on the third Tuesday of each month at 1:00 p.m. Central and are open to the entire GME community. During these sessions, participants will provide information about efforts in GME and MUA/P, solve for common challenges, and share helpful resources. GME institution and program leaders will connect with peers and ACGME representatives in breakout group.
NEW! Developing Faculty Competencies in Assessment
This course is designed to help participants build effective assessment programs for their residency or fellowship. Sessions are highly interactive and use multiple learning approaches, including simulation practice, peer consultations, and application exercises to provide participants with methods and tools for effective assessment. The course also provides a roadmap for developing an assessment system to assist participants in implementing changes within their own institution.
To give participants maximum opportunity to participate, absorb, and apply course content, the fall/winter course is offered over two, three-day sessions:
- Session One: September 11-13, 2024
- Session Two: December 4-6, 2024
Participants register once and attend both sessions.

Explore the ACGME’s Improving Assessment Using Direct Observation Toolkit with ACGME experts and toolkit authors. The toolkit offers faculty development curricula for institutions that can be adapted to local needs and provides individual faculty members with techniques that will help them become better educators. The toolkit is available at no cost to the GME community through the ACGME’s online learning portal, Learn at ACGME. The integration of entrustable professional activities (EPAs) within objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs) has yielded a valuable avenue for delivering timely feedback to residents. However, concerns about feedback quality persist. This study of internal medicine OSCE examiners showed that feedback quality was high, aligned with learning objectives, and was not affected by choice of grading rubric framework.
Protecting Graduate Medical Education and Gender-Diverse Youth

Like abortion care, gender-affirming care in the US is under political attack. To date, 22 states restrict gender-affirming care. Ensuring a workforce prepared to care for gender-diverse patients and provide affirming services means that physicians must receive education and training in these domains.

A core principle of holistic review in residency recruitment is to create an equitable process for all applicants, leading to with a goal to increase diversity in GME and ultimately the physician workforce. In this New Idea article, the authors standardized a process to create a more equitable process for ranking applicants.

Plastic Surgery Program Director Appointment Guidance Document Updated
The document, "Criteria for Review and Approval of Program Directors," is available under Documents and Resources in the Plastic Surgery section of the ACGME website. It provides guidance on the criteria and processes for review and approval of program directors, including additional information that must be submitted in cases where appointment of an interim program director may be necessary. Program and institutional leadership should review these criteria alongside the specialty-specific Program Requirements before submitting program director changes in ADS.

The following Review Committees seek nominations for their next resident member position. Nominees must be enrolled in an ACGME-accredited residency or fellowship program at the time of the appointment and may not serve more than one year beyond completion of that residency or fellowship. The Review Committees will forward their selections to the ACGME Board of Directors for approval. Terms begin July 1, 2025, and end June 30, 2027.
