NEW! Journal of Graduate Medical Education Articles of the Week
Does Early Involvement of Interns in a Quality Improvement Project Enhance Their Quality Improvement Skills?
Christine Hrach, MD; Richard Mink, MD, MACM
The authors of this study hypothesized that first-year residents assigned to an existing quality improvement (QI) project early in their program would have increased QI knowledge and confidence at the end of that first year of residency. They also hypothesized such residents would require less supervision to conduct QI activities at the end of residency, compared to those who design their own project or join one later. The study found that early involvement in QI activities did improve knowledge and confidence for first-year residents in the short term, but they still needed supervision to conduct QI studies later in residency.
The Orphaned Resident and Graduate Medical Education Program Closures
Ryan J. Keneally, MD; Harold A. Frazier, MD
In 2019, the closure of Hahnemann University Hospital raised awareness of the vulnerability of orphaned residents. Today, despite the impetus for change as a result of the closure, orphaned residents remain vulnerable to major disruptions to their education and training. In this article, authors discuss the duty of institutions to learners.
Shark Tanking Climate-Positive Innovations During Resident Orientation
Aaron Levy, DO; Cheryl Courtlandt, MD; Suzette Caudle, MD; Eric Anderson, EdD

The authors of this New Idea engaged residents in a creative, “gamified” process to discover solutions to improve climate-resilient patient care.
