TWO WEEKS! ACGME Seeks Public Member

The following committee seeks its next public member for a six-year term beginning July 1, 2026. Public members share the perspective of the public, foster public accountability, enrich the work of the committee through outside expertise, and create transparency. While nominees cannot be physicians, other health care practitioners are permitted if they are not employed by an organization with ACGME-accredited or -recognized residency or fellowship programs.

TWO WEEKS! ACGME Seeks Osteopathic Recognition Committee Member

The Osteopathic Recognition Committee is seeking one new physician member from the osteopathic graduate medical education (GME) community. Candidates must be a Director of Osteopathic Education or a core osteopathic faculty member in a program with Osteopathic Recognition. The new committee member's term will begin July 1, 2026, and end June 30, 2032.

Institutional Review Committee (IRC) Nominations Open

The IRC seeks two new designated institutional official (DIO) members. Candidates must be current or previous DIOs and they may self-nominate or be nominated by individuals or organizations. The new committee members' terms will begin July 1, 2026, and end June 30, 2032.

Program Requirements for Pediatrics Update

The Program Requirements that became effective July 1, 2025 have been updated to correct an error in the specialty-specific Background and Intent following 2.11.c. The ACGME is accepting nominations for the Coordinator Advisory Group, which serves as a consultative body to the ACGME administration concerning coordinator, GME, learning environment, and accreditation matters. Members will serve three-year terms beginning, July 1, 2026.

Non-Standard Training (NST) Policy Reminder

ACGME Policies and Procedures, Section 21.40, addresses the recognition of Sponsoring Institutions with NST programs for J-1 visa sponsorship. When the ACGME newly designates a specialty or subspecialty in which accreditation will be offered, Sponsoring Institutions may enroll NST trainees in NST programs in the same area of clinical focus for a period of three years after ACGME Board of Directors approval and the publication of ACGME Program Requirements for the specialty or subspecialty. In all other circumstances, Sponsoring Institutions may not offer NST programs in areas of clinical focus for which ACGME specialty or subspecialty accreditation or American Board of Medical Specialties member board certification is available.

Sponsoring Institutions and programs will receive an initial notification email noting all Annual Update requirements and respective deadlines. Each program's Annual Update timeframe appears in ADS on the right-hand side of the screen under “Program” > “Important Dates.”

In this episode, Editor-in-Chief Dr. Sullivan speaks with three guests who were integral to the latest supplement, Reimagining Residency: An American Medical Association Initiative to Transform GME. Starting in 2019, the AMA funded eleven five-year grants with a goal to transform residency educational programs to best address the workplace needs of the current and future health care system. This issue is a collection of findings from innovative projects that represent real-world applications of ideas that address pressing issues for learners, program leaders, health care systems, and patients.

Otolaryngology Applicants’ Preferences for Virtual vs In-Person Interviews During the 2023-2024 Application Cycle

Residency applicants and programs themselves have reported: difficulty distinguishing themselves in the virtual format; reduced exposure to medical campuses; and limited opportunity to establish personal connections. A 20-question survey distributed to otolaryngology – head and neck surgery applicants after Match Day during the 2023-2024 application cycle found that applicants were more satisfied with and preferred in-person interviews.

It Takes a Village: Building Educational Networks to Sustainably Support Rural Trauma and Surgical Residency Training

The rural institution featured in this New Ideas article partnered with two prominent urban teaching hospitals for rural surgical education and training. In just over two years, nine PGY-4 surgery residents have participated. Feedback has been positive; spending time at the urban teaching hospitals gave residents a holistic view of rural health care systems and addressed rural education and training challenges.
