NEW! Articles of the Week
Career Outcomes Among Graduates of 2 Urban Health Primary Care Training Programs
Preetham Bachina, BS; Ariel G. Vilidnitsky, MD; Katherine Shaw, MD; Monica Mix, MD, MPH; Talia Robledo-Gil, MD; Leonard Feldman, MD, FACP, FAAP, MHM
The authors of this article surveyed graduates from a single institution’s primary care for urban underserved populations and found that most have careers that align with the missions of practicing primary care in urban settings, serving underserved populations, and taking on leadership roles. Aligning a program’s curriculum and goals with a clear mission may effectively shape graduates’ career paths, and tracking alumni is a valuable way to measure this success.
Residency Program Signaling and Interview Scheduling: Time to Work Together for a Smoother UME-GME Transition
Alison Volpe Holmes, MD, MPH; Andrew Perron, MD; David Marzano, MD; Daniel Dent, MD; Arvind Suresh, MD; Karen George, MD, MPH
Residency application signaling allows applicants to indicate genuine interest in programs, helping reduce inflated application numbers and enabling programs to focus on candidates most likely to thrive. Specialties that permit more signals and use tiered systems have seen improved outcomes. Still, there is variability and a lack of standardization across specialties, which can create confusion and inefficiency. This article calls for collaboration among stakeholders to standardize signaling and interview scheduling processes, aiming to reduce stress, improve transparency, and create a fairer, more efficient transition from undergraduate to graduate medical education.
Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Work Hour Requirements: A Review of Recent Evidence
Meghan E. Lark, MD; Austin E. Airhart, MD; Payton M. Miller, MD; Jeanette W. Chung, PhD; Karl Y. Bilimoria, MD, MS
This article reviews the impact of ACGME resident work hour policies on patient and resident outcomes, finding that changes in work hour restrictions, including flexible scheduling and shift length limits, generally do not affect patient mortality, readmissions, or resident education outcomes. However, the evidence on resident satisfaction and well-being remains mixed and varies by specialty, with some studies showing increased occupational hazards and medical errors when weekly work hours exceed 80. Further specialty-specific research, especially using objective metrics, is needed to clarify the effects of extended duration shifts and guide future policy.
