Feedback is requested to inform a revision of the Program Requirements for Orthopaedic Surgery in several key areas. Those involved in orthopaedic surgery programs, including faculty members, current residents, and recent graduates, are encouraged to complete the survey.

NEW! ACGME Resident/Fellow and Faculty Surveys

The ACGME’s annual Resident/Fellow and Faculty Surveys for programs in the US open February 9, 2026, and will close April 10, 2026.

Sponsoring Institution and program leaders will receive survey alerts throughout the administration period and must notify survey takers using the existing mechanisms in the Accreditation Data System (ADS).

Programs should review and, if necessary, update their Resident/Fellow and Faculty Rosters in ADS before the surveys open to ensure accurate scheduling.

New This Year
Residents/fellows who started in the program this academic year and currently hold a status of "Started program off-cycle" WILL be scheduled to participate in the survey as long as they have been in the program for at least 60 days.

NEW! Updated Program Requirement and Application Files Now Available

At its September 2025 meeting, the Board of Directors approved an interim revision of the Residency, Fellowship, One-Year Fellowship, and Post-Doctoral Education Program versions of the Common Program Requirements,and related modifications to specialty-/subspecialty-specific Program Requirements, effective July 1, 2026. The updated Common Program Requirements are available on the Common Program Requirements page of the ACGME website, labeled as “Effective 7/1/2026.”

The updated Program Requirements and Specialty-Specific Applications for all specialties/subspecialties have been posted on the Program Requirements and FAQs and Applications page of each specialty section.

A compilation of the changes can be found in the “Specialty-/Subspecialty-Specific Modifications Effective July 1, 2026” document, available under the “Requirements” heading on the Program Requirements and FAQs and Applications page of each specialty section.

DEADLINE EXTENDED AND SPECIALTIES ADDED! ACGME Seeks Appeals Panel Members

The ACGME is seeking physicians to serve on standing Appeals Panels for the following specialties:

  • Allergy and Immunology
  • Child Neurology
  • Colon and Rectal Surgery
  • Medical Genetics and Genomics
  • Nuclear Medicine
  • Ophthalmology
  • Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine
  • Radiation Oncology

APPLICANT CRITERIA

  • Must be certified by the relevant American Board of Medical Specialties member board or American Osteopathic Association certifying board.
  • Must be able to devote sufficient time to the Appeals Panel work.
  • Should have at least three years' experience as a program director, department chair, associate/assistant program director, and/or core faculty member.
  • Applicants not currently serving in one of these roles may be considered if they held one of these positions within the last three years.
  • Applicants’ programs must have a status of Continued Accreditation.

Rural and Underserved Interest Group Networking Event at #ACGME2026

The February session will take place in person on Saturday, February 21 at 7:00 a.m. Pacific during the 2026 ACGME Annual Educational Conference in San Diego, California.

This networking session is intended for those working in rural and underserved areas to learn from one another’s experiences and is open to the first 50 to respond. Breakfast will be provided.

Establishing Resident Experiences in Medically Underserved Areas Webinar Recording Available

Many areas in the US face a shortage of physicians in various specialties, and research has shown that GME programs are an effective strategy to recruit and retain physicians in these areas. Establishing experiences for residents can benefit these underserved areas in many ways.

This webinar for those in medically underserved areas explains the benefits to becoming a rotation site for residents; explores accreditation, reimbursement, and other considerations; and includes practical tips, resources, and steps for getting started.

NEW! Training in Improving Assessment Using Direct Observation

Explore the ACGME’s new CME module, Training in Improving Assessment Using Direct Observation, and improve the frequency and quality of direct observation of learners with patients. Participants will:

  • Learn and reflect on the importance of direct observation and feedback in competency-based medical education
  • Describe the role of faculty development to promote high-quality assessment and feedback
  • Discover ways to use the online toolkit to support faculty development

Earn up to a maximum of 2.5 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. The toolkit featured in the module offers faculty development curricula for institutions that can be adapted to local needs and provides individual faculty members with techniques that will help them become better educators. The toolkit is available at no cost to the GME community through the ACGME’s digital learning platform, Learn at ACGME.

NEW! Self-Empowerment Workshop for Coordinators

Session: February 2-10, 2026
Details: This is a seven-day online workshop with one interactive, live session on February 5 from 12:00-1:30 p.m. Central. Participants must begin Day 1 on February 2.

Learn practical strategies for acting as a leader in the coordinator role, successful networking, overcoming challenges to professionalism, promoting achievements, and effectively navigating complex interpersonal situations.

Continuing Education Credit
This activity has been approved for continuing education credit by the Training Administrators of Graduate Medical Education (TAGME). Participants who complete the course in its entirety are eligible to receive 10 education credits in the content area of professional development.

This free workshop is repeated monthly.

This qualitative study explores how obstetrics and gynecology residents perceive learning patient counseling and informed consent, finding that skills develop primarily through experiential, socially situated learning.
