The 2023 ACGME Annual Educational Conference has always included both general interest graduate medical education (GME) sessions and focused sessions for specific audiences. Some of the focused sessions were previously offered as pre-conferences at an additional fee.
In an exciting development for 2023, the conference registration fee includes Full-Day Courses on topics of interest to specific audiences. Full-Day Courses replace the former pre-conferences, but still take place on the first day of the conference.
Each Full-Day Course offers participants the best of both worlds, allowing program directors, coordinators, designated institutional officials (DIOs), faculty members, and those interested in learning more about Osteopathic Recognition to benefit from detailed sessions in their area of interest and to network with colleagues specific to their roles before joining others in the broader conference sessions.
Below is a summary of each of the five Full-Day Courses available.
Insights into the Accreditation Process: A Course for Program Directors
This Full-Day Course for program directors covers the ACGME, Review Committees, and the accreditation review process, as well as ACGME data collection. Compliance with the Common Program Requirements is also covered, as is information about the Clinical Competency Committee, assessment of residents/fellows, and program evaluation. The course will include didactic presentations and the opportunity for participants to ask questions. There will be a session on applications for program leaders starting a new program in the US or internationally.
ACGME/AOGME Osteopathic Recognition Full-Day Course
This Full-Day Course was developed by the ACGME in partnership with the Assembly of Osteopathic Graduate Medical Educators (AOGME) to support programs with Osteopathic Recognition and programs that may consider applying for Osteopathic Recognition. The first part of the course includes general sessions to allow participants to hear and learn directly from Directors of Osteopathic Education (DOEs), osteopathic faculty members, and designated osteopathic residents from programs with ACGME Osteopathic Recognition. The second part of the course will orient DOEs to their role and responsibilities and will be delivered by Osteopathic Recognition Committee leaders and staff members.
American Medical Association CME credit will be provided by the ACGME, and American Osteopathic Association CME will be provided by the AOGME.
Full-Day Course for DIOs
This Full-Day Course is designed for both new and experienced DIOs. Didactic and interactive learning activities will focus on the roles and responsibilities of the DIO, especially as they relate to overseeing ACGME-accredited programs and ensuring compliance with ACGME requirements. Sessions will also emphasize the professional development of the DIO as a health systems leader. DIOs will learn to lead the transformation of their Sponsoring Institution into a “learning organization” that fosters continuous improvement through strategic planning and structured educational activities, and that encourages the integration of GME and the clinical learning environment.
For Medical Educators and Researchers: Advancing Outcomes-Based Research in Medical Education
Participants will explore recent advances in outcomes-oriented research focused on providing guidance and feedback to improve medical education. A symposium format will offer panel discussions and group activities moderated by GME experts to promote interdisciplinary knowledge sharing among participants, provide insights into recent methodologic approaches and challenges, share findings of validity and outcomes-oriented research, and discuss the implications of outcomes research for improving medical education and advancing competency-based medical education. This course will address how programs, institutions, and regulatory agencies can advance educational improvement by using various types of outcomes data, such as clinical and patient safety indicators and patient observations to shed light on the relationship between learning experiences across the educational continuum and the resulting medical care delivered by graduates of GME programs. The course will include key topics on outcomes research, such as the current state of knowledge, emerging questions, sources of data, and methods of inquiry.
Participants will have opportunities to form collaborations to advance their own research activity and formulate an action plan for their own programs while influencing national priorities into researching the outcomes of medical education.
Coordinator Forum: Navigating with Confidence
The 13th Annual Coordinator Forum will feature a full day of sessions designed for new and experienced institutional and program coordinators to gain knowledge and network with colleagues. The Forum will feature two plenaries delivered by experienced administrative leaders who will discuss their professional journeys and career advancement. Participants will explore breakout sessions of their choosing from a variety of topics applicable to the coordinator role. Most sessions were selected from submissions from the coordinator community and cover topics related to professional development and best practices. The theme, Navigating with Confidence, emerged from community submissions on finding the confidence as administrative leaders to excel wherever coordinators are in their career path and to advocate for the role they were made for. The Coordinator Forum will conclude with a short networking event so that participants can recap the day with new friends and colleagues before continuing to the Marvin R. Dunn Welcoming Poster Reception and Exhibitor Kick-Off.
