NEW! Plenary Topics Announced!
The plenary presentations for the National Learning Community of Sponsoring Institutions meeting will cover three critically important topics:
- The impact of the Supreme Court decision on affirmative action in higher education and its relevance to Sponsoring Institutions for GME
- Partnering with Clinical Leaders: the new accreditation of Sponsoring Institution-based fellowships in health care administration, leadership, and management
- GME/Clinical Learning Environment Integration: University of Chicago’s IGNITE Initiative to Optimize Patient Care
In-person and newly created remote opportunities are designed to allow participants to learn and connect with other institutional leaders to advance forward-looking improvements in Sponsoring Institutions and clinical learning environments. Leaders will collaborate through educational experiences, explore successful practices, and address challenges in advancing and optimizing GME.
Designed specifically for designated institutional officials (DIOs) and other institutional leaders, the meeting will convene in Chicago and online. Registration is open through September 18, 2023, but space is limited for in-person attendees.

Letters of Notification and Site Visit Announcement Letter Change
Currently, when the ACGME communicates an accreditation/recognition action or the scheduling of an accreditation/recognition site visit, the Letter of Notification or Site Visit Announcement Letter is posted in the Accreditation Data System (ADS) and is also attached to the email sent to the institution and/or program leadership.
Beginning September 14, 2023, letters will no longer be attached to these emails. These letters will continue to post in ADS, and the email will continue to provide instructions on how to access the letter in ADS. This change is being implemented to increase security and confidentiality.

Remediation Toolkit Available
The ACGME is pleased to launch of the ACGME Remediation Toolkit, authored by renowned experts from across the country. The free course is designed to provide educators and administrators in GME the knowledge, tools, and strategies necessary to effectively address the challenges faced by struggling learners in the field.
The course comprises 11 modules covering a range of essential topics related to remediation. These modules will equip educators and administrators with a solid foundation for addressing the needs of struggling learners, implementing effective remediation strategies, and fostering a supportive and conducive learning environment in GME.
The remediation toolkit is part of a suite of materials the ACGME provides to aid in faculty development, including the Improving Assessment Using Direct Observation Toolkit and the Developing Faculty Competencies in Assessment Course mentioned in this e-Communication.

MUA/P Interest Group Sessions
The ACGME will hold sessions for GME community members involved in addressing the needs of MUA/Ps (places or communities in which groups of people have unmet health or health care needs).
The aim of these interest group sessions is for the community to learn about efforts in GME and MUA/P, to solve for common challenges, and to share helpful knowledge and resources.

NEW! ACGME Case Log Update for Ophthalmology
The glaucoma category is being updated in the Case Log to reflect current practices and improve documentation of residents’ experiences. The changes should be completed by the end of October 2023. New glaucoma minimums will be in effect for the 2024 graduates although not enforced by the Review Committee until 2025 to give programs time to acclimate. Programs should ensure residents are recording all glaucoma cases in the Case Log System. More information will be shared once the Case Log updates are finalized.

NEW! Meet with the Orthopaedic Hand Surgery Subspecialty Executive Director in Toronto
Hand surgery program leaders can meet with the ACGME Review Committee Executive Director during the 78th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand in Toronto, Ontario.
Appointments will be scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis and take place on October 3, 2023, and October 4, 2023, at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

Block Diagram Assistance for Dermatology Programs
Instructions and an example for construction of a block diagram available in ADS to assist in completing the Annual Update. Review the instructions here; users are required to log into ADS to access the document.
Rural Track Questionnaires Added for Obstetrics and Gynecology Programs
Obstetrics and gynecology residency programs applying for a rural track must now complete a supplemental questionnaire. A questionnaire has been created for new programs applying for ACGME accreditation and requesting Rural Track Program (RTP) designation. A second questionnaire along with supplemental instructions have been made for existing programs that submit a permanent complement increase request to add a rural track within the program and for those pursuing RTP designation.

Case Log Update for Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
The ACGME Case Log has been updated to better document fellows’ experiences. More than 40 additional CPT codes are being tracked. Fellows can also now log laser resurfacing of the face (to find this option from the Area/Type/Code tab, enter a keyword in the Code or Keyword search tool ).
Reports will reflect some changes to procedure types including the addition of “Temporal artery biopsy.” Additionally, the type “Botox” has been renamed “Injectables.” A list of all procedures tracked in the Case Log is available in ADS (Case Logs > Download/Reports > Tracked Codes).

Near-Peer Supervision in Primary Care: Bringing Teaching Teams From the Wards to the Clinic

While residents train for both hospital-based and outpatient careers, near-peer teaching (i.e., a more senior resident precepts a junior resident), is often concentrated in inpatient settings. This Educational Innovation article evaluates a pilot program called Primary Care Teaching (PC Teach), which translates the near-peer, experiential learning teaching model of inpatient wards to the continuity clinic setting via a longitudinal resident-as-preceptor program. PC Teach showed promise as being feasible, acceptable to participants, and increasing confidence in teaching.
Comparing Machine Learning Models and Human Raters When Ranking Medical Student Performance Evaluations

The Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) is a lengthy narrative summary of each student’s performance in US medical schools. While informative, these writings are challenging for residency programs to evaluate for large numbers of applicants. The authors of this Educational Innovation article created a novel rubric to assess MSPE narratives, and used three machine language models to rank MSPEs and to compare faculty member rubric scores with machine language model outputs. While the rubric performed well, the machine language models were unable to reliably screen and rank MSPE narratives.

The ACGME will offer its longstanding Developing Faculty Competencies in Assessment course in person in the ACGME office in Chicago, Illinois, October 8-13, 2023.
This course is intended to help participants design and make improvements in their own assessment programs and strive toward achieving the goals of competency-based medical education.
ACGME Seeks Resident/Fellow Members
The following Review and Recognition Committees seek nominations for their next resident member positions. Nominees must be enrolled in an ACGME-accredited residency or fellowship program at the time of the appointment and may not serve more than one year beyond completion of that residency or fellowship. The Review/Recognition Committee will forward its selection to the ACGME Board of Directors for approval. Terms begin July 1, 2024 and end June 30, 2026.
