NEW! ACGME Announces Back to Bedside Funding Recipients for 2024-2026 Cycle
The ACGME is proud to announce the 30 resident/fellow teams that will receive funding in the fourth round of Back to Bedside, a resident-/fellow-led initiative to develop innovative strategies for finding deeper connections with patients and improving physician and patient well-being.
In addition to funding, the ACGME provides grant recipients with project and change management skills, leadership education, and mentorship through Learning Collaborative meetings at the ACGME office in Chicago and regular check-ins throughout the two-year grant cycle. This will culminate in an opportunity to present their projects at the 2026 Annual Educational Conference in San Diego, California.
NEW! Accreditation Data System (ADS) News
ADS AND CASE LOG SYSTEM DOWNTIME FOR ACADEMIC YEAR ROLLOVER
ADS and the Case Log System will be unavailable from 11:59 p.m. Central on Friday, June 28 until approximately 4:00 p.m. Central on Saturday, June 29. The systems will convert to the 2024-2025 academic year during this period. After the rollover is complete, all ACGME data systems will reflect Academic Year 2024-2025, and all residents and fellows will have an unconfirmed status. Email questions to ADS@acgme.org.
NRMP® YEARLY RESIDENT DATA AVAILABLE IN ADS
In an effort to reduce burden, the ACGME reached an agreement with the National Resident Matching Program® (NRMP®) to receive yearly data regarding residents who have matched into ACGME-accredited programs. The first set of data was received in May and will be available for the Annual Update process. On July 1, programs can add new residents/fellows, and an optional NRMP-dropdown will appear to populate data on the form.

The ACGME hosts a monthly virtual interest group session for GME community members involved in addressing the needs of medically underserved areas and populations (MUA/Ps,) which are places or communities with groups of people who have unmet health or health care needs.

NEW! Learn at ACGME: New Dashboard
Learn at ACGME has undergone improvements and feature enhancements to improve function and user experience, including the dashboard.
The updated dashboard provides an easy, visual way for learners to see how many courses they have started and completed, and the totality of what is available in Learn at ACGME. Additionally, users can now remove courses from the dashboard. This feature is particularly helpful if a course was started accidentally or is no longer relevant.
Existing accounts will keep the same username and password and may be prompted to complete a brief survey that will create their profiles in the updated system. A free account is required to access most content in the platform. The ACGME will continue to make improvements to accessibility and functionality.

NEW! Revised Requirements for Nuclear Medicine Go into Effect July 1
The Program Requirements for Graduate Medical Education in Nuclear Medicine underwent an interim revision in 2023, and the changes go into effect July 1, 2024. The small number of requirement revisions in the Curriculum Organization section under Patient Care were made to align the standards with changes in the American Board of Nuclear Medicine's requirements to sit for the board exam.
Further, these changes allow more flexibility for programs to meet the standards and represent an evolution of practice with regard to fewer radioiodine therapies for benign and malignant thyroid disorders, and more parenteral therapies. The revised Program Requirements, including a tracked-changes version, are available under Program Requirements, FAQs, and Applications in the Nuclear Medicine section of the ACGME website.
NEW! Plastic Surgery Program Director Appointment Guidance Document Updated
The document, "Criteria for Review and Approval of Program Directors," is available under Documents and Resources in the Plastic Surgery section of the ACGME website. It provides guidance on the criteria and processes for review and approval of program directors, including additional information that must be submitted in cases where appointment of an interim program director may be necessary. Program and institutional leadership should review these criteria alongside the specialty-specific Program Requirements before submitting program director changes in ADS.

Looking Beyond the Numbers: A Comparison of Operative Self-Efficacy, Supervision, and Case Volume in General Surgery Residency

Graduates of surgery residency programs report lower-than-ideal self-efficacy for 10 commonly performed operations, but it is not clear if that perception is related to other data assessing operative independence. This study compared data from three sources and found that in order to increase residents’ self-efficacy, attention must be paid to the quality of the operative experience as opposed to just case volume.

ACGME Seeks Resident/Fellow Members
