NEW! Learn at ACGME: New Dashboard

Learn at ACGME has undergone improvements and feature enhancements to improve function and user experience, including the dashboard.

The updated dashboard provides an easy, visual way for learners to see how many courses they have started and completed, and the totality of what is available in Learn at ACGME. Additionally, users can now remove courses from the dashboard. This feature is particularly helpful if a course was started accidentally or is no longer relevant.

Existing accounts will keep the same username and password and may be prompted to complete a brief survey that will create their profiles in the updated system. A free account is required to access most content in the platform. The ACGME will continue to make improvements to accessibility and functionality.

Email questions and feedback to learn@acgme.org.

NEW! Revised Requirements for Nuclear Medicine Go into Effect July 1

The Program Requirements for Graduate Medical Education in Nuclear Medicine underwent an interim revision in 2023, and the changes go into effect July 1, 2024. The small number of requirement revisions in the Curriculum Organization section under Patient Care were made to align the standards with changes in the American Board of Nuclear Medicine's requirements to sit for the board exam.

Further, these changes allow more flexibility for programs to meet the standards and represent an evolution of practice with regard to fewer radioiodine therapies for benign and malignant thyroid disorders, and more parenteral therapies. The revised Program Requirements, including a tracked-changes version, are available under Program Requirements, FAQs, and Applications in the Nuclear Medicine section of the ACGME website.

NEW! Plastic Surgery Program Director Appointment Guidance Document Updated

The document, "Criteria for Review and Approval of Program Directors," is available under Documents and Resources in the Plastic Surgery section of the ACGME website. It provides guidance on the criteria and processes for review and approval of program directors, including additional information that must be submitted in cases where appointment of an interim program director may be necessary. Program and institutional leadership should review these criteria alongside the specialty-specific Program Requirements before submitting program director changes in ADS.

Email questions to Senior Accreditation Administrator Caleb Mitchell.

Institutional Update Reminders, Resources, and Office Hours

The ACGME emailed designated institutional officials (DIOs) and institutional coordinators April 24 with key information about the ADS Annual Update. Resources to assist in the update are available in the ADS Help Center.

Office hours to discuss the changes and answer questions will be held using this link on Tuesdays from 3:00-4:00 p.m. Central on July 9 and July 30.

Email questions to sponsoringinstitutions@acgme.org.

NEW! Hot Topics in MedEd Podcast Episode

Listen now! Gail M. Sullivan, MD speaks with the creators of the Journal of Graduate Medical Education (JGME) Literature Review Series, Robin Parker, MLIS; Anna MacLeod, PhD; and Lara Varpio, PhD. They discuss the need for understanding literature reviews, how this series came to be, and why there might be a better approach to medical education questions than a systematic review.

This series covers eight influential approaches to knowledge synthesis with two articles for each review type: an overview with background information on philosophical foundations, purposes, and expected products for readers and researchers; and a short article with steps that outline the “nuts and bolts” of this type of review.

Check out the entire Literature Review Series.

NEW! JGME Articles of the Week

Editors’ Guidance for Submitting Qualitative Research to the Journal of Graduate Medical Education
Lalena M. Yarris, MD, MCR; Dorene Balmer, PhD; Rachel Gottlieb-Smith, MD, MHPE; Gail M. Sullivan, MD, MPH
The editors at JGME constantly seek to support authors in submitting to the journal. This Editorial offers guidance by summarizing some key features of qualitative research that are often considered during the review process.

Looking Beyond the Numbers: A Comparison of Operative Self-Efficacy, Supervision, and Case Volume in General Surgery Residency
Rachel M. Jensen, MD, MHPE; Ananya Anand, MD; LaDonna E. Kearse, MD; James R. Korndorffer Jr., MD, MHPE
Graduates of surgery residency programs report lower-than-ideal self-efficacy for 10 commonly performed operations, but it is not clear if that perception is related to other data assessing operative independence. This study compared data from three sources and found that in order to increase residents’ self-efficacy, attention must be paid to the quality of the operative experience as opposed to just case volume.
