Correction: Links for Approved Requirement Revisions

A technical glitch in last week's e-Communication caused the links in the Board of Directors section to reroute to the wrong page. We regret the error.

An email with the correction was sent Tuesday, October 8, and the links were corrected in the online version of the e-Communication on the ACGME website.


Comment on Draft Preliminary Recommendations from the Advisory Commission on Additional Licensing Models

The Advisory Commission on Additional Licensing Models, co-chaired by the ACGME, Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB), and Intealth, has released draft preliminary recommendations for public comment, aimed at guiding state medical boards and policymakers in developing new licensing pathways for internationally trained physicians.

The recommendations, which focus on eligibility requirements, are available for feedback until December 6, 2024, with final guidance expected in early 2025.

FRIDAY! Apply for the CLE Quadruple Aim Initiative Pilot

The CLER Program is seeking up to 10 teams from clinical learning environments (CLEs) of ACGME-accredited Sponsoring Institutions to participate in the pilot cycle of a new improvement network, the CLE Quadruple Aim Initiative. This initiative aims to enhance GME integration into CLE efforts to optimize patient care and advance the Quadruple Aim of simultaneously improving patient outcomes, enhancing patient experience, improving health care practitioner well-being, and reducing cost of care.

Selected teams will learn from one another by participating in joint learning sessions while engaging in a 15-month clinical quality improvement project of strategic priority to their clinical site. The application deadline is October 18, 2024.

NEW! Participate in the Upcoming Revision of Program Requirements for Medical Genetics and Genomics

The Review Committee for Medical Genetics and Genomics will soon begin work on the 10-year major revision of the Program Requirements for Graduate Medical Education in Medical Genetics and Genomics. To inform this next set of Program Requirements, a series of activities designed to gather relevant information is planned, including a literature review; a series of one-on-one interviews with members of key stakeholder groups; development and administration of a survey on key issues relevant to medical genetics and genomics education; and a stakeholder summit to be held in 2025.

As this work begins, the ACGME seeks 10 current Medical Genetics and Genomics program directors who are interested in participating in a one-on-one, one-hour interview to provide their perspective on the future of medical genetics and genomics residency education. Interested program directors should complete this form.

Non-Standard Training (NST) Updates

Office Hours
Director, Sponsoring Institutions Projects Katharina Wang and Vice President, Sponsoring Institutions Paul Foster Johnson will host office hours to answer questions about recognition of Sponsoring Institutions with NST programs for physicians with J-1 visas.

No registration is required. Office hours will take place October 30 from 12:00-1:00 p.m. Central.

Site Visit Reassignment Dates
The IRC has approved a plan to reassign approximate site visit dates for Initial Recognition of Sponsoring Institutions with NST programs beginning in October 2025. The reassignment of dates will provide additional time for Sponsoring Institutions to develop NST programs while the IRC prepares further guidance in advance of implementing the site visit process. Each Sponsoring Institution with an Initial Recognition status will soon receive notification of its reassigned site visit date in ADS.

ACGME Seeks Appeals Panel Members

The ACGME is seeking physicians to serve on standing Appeals Panels for the following specialties:

  • Dermatology
  • Neurological Surgery
  • Orthopaedic Surgery
  • Preventive Medicine
  • Vascular Surgery

Applicant Criteria

  • Must be certified by the relevant American Board of Medical Specialties member board or American Osteopathic Association certifying board.
  • Must be able to devote sufficient time to the Appeals Panel work.
  • Should have at least three years' experience as a program director, department chair, associate/assistant program director, and/or core faculty member.
    • Applicants not currently serving in one of these roles may be considered if they held one of these positions within the last three years.
  • Applicants’ programs must have a status of Continued Accreditation.

Review Committee for Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery Office Hours

Program leaders can meet with the ACGME Review Committee executive director and chair during the 2024 combined meeting of the Society of University Otolaryngologists and Head & Neck Surgeons, Association of Academic Departments of Otolaryngology and Head & Neck Surgery, and Otolaryngology Program Directors Organization.

Appointments will be held on a first-come, first-served basis at the Hyatt Regency Phoenix on November 22, 2024.

Permanent Complement Request Guidelines

The Review Committee for Surgery now requires all programs to complete the Institutional Operative Experience form with an application for a permanent complement increase.

Programs interested in having a permanent complement request reviewed at the January 2025 Review Committee meeting should send the completed form via email to Associate Executive Director Kelsey Sill, MHA by Monday, December 16.

As part of the ongoing effort to encourage participation of the GME community and the public in the process of reviewing potential new specialties or subspecialties for accreditation, the ACGME offers a 45-day comment period to the community of interest regarding proposed new specialties and subspecialties. Direct Observation Toolkit Workshop

Explore the ACGME’s Improving Assessment Using Direct Observation Toolkit with ACGME experts and toolkit authors. The toolkit, available at no cost through Learn at ACGME , offers faculty development curricula for institutions that can be adapted to local needs and provides individual faculty members with techniques that will help them become better educators.

Developing Faculty Competencies in Assessment

This course is designed to help participants build effective assessment programs for their residency or fellowship and will provide a roadmap for developing an assessment system to assist participants in implementing changes within their own institution. Sessions are highly interactive and use multiple learning approaches, including simulation practice, peer consultations, and application exercises to provide participants with methods and tools for effective programs of assessment. Topics include assessment methods, feedback, direct observation, clinical competency committees, and more. 

The spring 2025 course will be offered in Chicago, Illinois, in a six-day session. Registration will close March 3, 2025.

ACGME Seeks Public Members

The following Committees seek their next public member for a six-year term beginning July 1, 2025. Public members share the perspective of the public, foster public accountability, enrich the work of the Committee through outside expertise, and create transparency. While nominees cannot be physicians, other health care practitioners are permitted if they are not employed by an organization with ACGME-accredited or -recognized residency or fellowship programs.
